Pre-disposing factors

Lack of exercise and/or over-feeding are the most common causes of excess weight in pet dogs, but there are a number of factors that increase the risk.

The risk of obesity is increased as animals age and if they have underlying health problems which increase appetite or alter the metabolism, eg hypothyroïdism, or which limit mobility, eg arthritis.

Certain breeds also appear to be more prone to obesity – although potentially any dog can become overweight.

Some high risk breeds:

Beagle

Cocker Spaniel

Dachshund

Labrador

Others include Golden Retrievers, Collies, Shelties and Basset Hounds.

In addition, dogs that have been neutered are more prone to weight gain.
